A Christian responds to the “It Gets Better” project.
No talking. Just watch.
Alright then. I hear what many of you are probably saying — that this man is not representative of all Christians, or that he’s not a true Christian. To which I say: True, but irrelevant, and bullshit.
First up, with the ‘not a true Christian’ crap, I’ve got some bad news: Whoever you are, you definitely aren’t the arbiter of who is and isn’t a ‘true’ Christian. You’ve got Biblical references? Well so does this guy, and they’re just as valid as yours. Ponder that.
Next — no, this man does not represent all Christians. But he does recommend a whole legion of Christians out there, many of whom are the entire reason the It Gets Better project has to exist in the first place. He’s not an outlier. So if you are a Christian and you disagree with what this man says, I’ve got a job for you: Make this man an outlier.
Be vocal. Post responses. Attend rallies. Join Christian groups that petition for gay rights; if there isn’t one near you, start one. Be an example in your community, and if speak out against any bigotry that might sneak into your church on a Sunday.
It’s not actually that much work, when you think about it. All you need to do is lead by example, and openly smack down bigotry when it rears its ugly head. But don’t dare trivialise the problem by dismissing this guy as a kook. He’s not — he’s one of your own, and it’s time for you personally and as a community to disown him and his ilk in public. Otherwise, you are part of the problem.
